VW Crafter Conversions

Seats & Beds
We specialise in fitting the market leading RIB seat/bed system which provide 3 point belted comfortable travel seats that fold into perfectly flat beds that can be up to 2m (6ft 6”) long. They are available in a range of widths from 60cm to 150cm wide, seating from 1 to 3 people – meaning it’s possible with some layouts to seat up to 5 people in belted travel seats.

Different internal Crafter conversion layouts will suit different width RIB seats – in our three standard layouts you will find the following RIB seats each one will create a bed that is 186cm (6ft 1″) long;

Barra – 1 x 129cm wide 

Mull – 2 x 60cm wide 

Harris – 1 x 86cm wide 

Where we provide the brand new VW Crafter base van, the driver and front passenger cab seats will swivel simply to face the rear – a feature that is fitted by VW when the original van is manufactured.

Fixed High Roof or Pop Top Roof
Traditionally the Crafter long wheel base van has been the base vehicle of choice, however, the recent development of a high quality elevating pop top designed specifically designed for the new style VW Crafter has opened up the possibilities of spacious conversions to the shorter medium wheel base.

Fitting a pop top elevating roof allows easy and very comfortable sleeping for 4 people in a medium wheel base Crafter whilst also leaving room for an enclosed toilet/shower room, full seating area and ample storage.

For those customers who prefer to stay with the original VW factory fitted steel high roof then a conversion to either the medium or long wheel base Crafter is still of course perfectly possible. We will work with you to design a layout that works best for you.

All our layouts are based upon the front wheel drive Crafter with the high roof design as this gives ample head height inside the van. Choosing a rear wheel drive variant raises the vehicle floor height by 100mm and hence reduces the internal head height down to a fraction over 6 feet (1.8m) – a head height which is then also reduced by a further 50mm around roof vents, skylights etc.

Cupboards & Storage
With a team of skilled carpenters every conversion we undertake is an individual project. Maximising your cupboards and storage in a confined space is critical and our approach allows us to design layouts which will fit with the items and accessories you need to carry.

It is always vital to pay close attention to the overall weight of a finished Crafter conversion as it is crucial not to exceed the manufacturer’s published payload. We work carefully to ensure the furniture materials we use are lightweight, durable and versatile – always using a willow plywood with a hard laminate finish on both sides.

Lighting quality and position can make all the difference to the usability of your conversion. All our lighting is LED, which reduces the load on your leisure batteries, and we will work with you to locate the lights in the places that work best for you.

Fridge, Sink & Hob
The size of your kitchen counter top will ultimately decide the dimensions of the sink and hob that you can choose – from combined sink/hob units or individual hobs with multiple burners to separate sinks with wooden chopping board tops or glass lids. We have chosen the appliances that we feel fit best into the Mull, Barra and Harris, but if there is a different hob or sink design that you would prefer then we’re very happy to look at this with you to see if it will fit.

We will also talk you through the pros and cons of the different fuel sources that you could use for cooking – LPG (butane/propane gas), diesel or electric.

Fridges are available in a range of volumes and dimensions. We would always recommend a 12v powered compressor fridge as opposed to a “3 way” gas/12v/230v design. Modern compressor fridges are now incredibly power efficient and unlike “3 way” fridges will stay cool and freeze in the highest daytime summer temperatures and do not require gas and ventilation holes to be cut into the side of the van.

Insulation & Flooring
With a fully insulated bonded birch plywood floor and side cavity filled with recycled plastic bottle cavity insulation we keep you as warm as we can. Our commercial grade non slip vinyl flooring is as tough as it comes, is simple to wipe clean and looks great.
